> The Kogut Vision > CORI REFORM SMART ON CRIME LEGISLATION
CORI REFORM SMART ON CRIME LEGISLATION I SUPPORT CORI REFORM AND I CALL ON OPPONENTS TO TAKE PUBLIC STAND. SENATOR BUONICONTI HAS SAID NO TO CORI REFORM
Michael T. Kogut, democratic candidate for Hampden County District Attorney has called on his opponents to take a public position on the Criminal Offender Record Information (CORI) reforms passed by both the Massachusetts House and Senate. The legislation is now in conference committee and must be on the Governor s desk for signature before the end of the legislative session scheduled for the end of July.
Kogut stated, I have sent a letter to members of the House and Senate conference committee on CORI legislation stating, as a candidate for District Attorney I fully support the CORI reforms passed by the House and Senate and urged them to take swift action to ensure a final bill is on the Governor s desk for signature by the end of the legislative session
This bi-partisan legislation is smart on crime and is long overdue. It protects public safety, it gives those who have served their time and turned their lives around a chance to become productive members of society, it ensures protection for victims and sets clear and cost effective guidelines for employers. The work on this bill by Suffolk County District Attorney Daniel Conley and Middlesex District Attorney Gerard Leone is an example of modern district attorneys being tough on crime and smart on crime
Kogut continued, I challenge my opponents to take a public position on this important reform legislation. As a candidate for District Attorney I do not believe one can remain silent and on the sidelines. Silence is not leadership. Voters deserve to know where each candidate stands on these important issues.
Senator Buoniconti has made his position clear. He opposes the reforms. He was one of only 12 State Senators who voted against this bill. The Senate passed the legislation 26 for to 12 against and the House passed the legislation 165 for and 29 against. Kogut added.
Kogut further stated, Senator Buoniconti s opposition to these reforms is short-sighted. His attempt to politically position himself as tough on crime with his no vote was neither tough nor smart on crime. I urge him to change is vote to yes on the final bill.
The House legislation closely followed the Senate legislation and received support from many statewide groups including the Associated Industries of Massachusetts, the Massachusetts Sheriffs Association, The Massachusetts Major City Chief s Association, The Mass Bar Association and the Massachusetts AFL-CIO among others.
